Redwood Ride I - July 17, 2010
The Redwood Empire Endurance Riders invite you to join them at this year's Redwood Ride I in Orick, CA, 45 minutes north of Eureka on scenic Highway 101. We’re offering 50, 25 and 10-mile fun rides at both. Limited to 60 riders at each ride.
Redwood Ride I is a moderate level ride (though even a new horse and rider should have no problems if riding cautiously), held in the spectacular Redwood National Park. It consists of 85% single track trail, much of it through gigantic old-growth redwood forest, and 15% on old logging roads. These are the only AERC rides held within the actual boundaries of a National Park. There is an abundance of wildlife: elk (who often visit right in camp), bears, and osprey.
The ride will climb from sea level in camp to around 1,000 feet. Vet checks will be away from camp. Crews are allowed, but carpooling crews is highly recommended. The ride camp staging area and finish line is at the Orick Rodeo Grounds.
Directions: From either direction, follow Highway 101 through the center of town. Coming from the south, just before the Redwood Creek Bridge, turn right at the School and follow the road to the Rodeo Grounds. Coming from the north, just as you drive over the Redwood Creek Bridge, turn left at the Orick School and follow the road to the Orick Rodeo Grounds.
Ride Rules: Entries limited to 60 riders. Redwood Rides will comply with all AERC and REER ride rules. AERC helmet rule for juniors will apply. Dogs are allowed, ON LEASH at all times. No dogs in the vet in, vet check, or dinner area. Dogs that are loose, lunge at passing people, or otherwise cause complaints, may have their owners uninvited from future REER rides. Please be responsible owners so we can all enjoy our pets at future REER rides. No open fires. If you bring an extra horse that you are not entering, we may charge $5, because the grounds charge us per horse.
Ride Camp: Opens Friday morning before each ride and closes at noon on the Sunday after the ride. There is typically plenty of room on flat grass for trailers and corrals. Additional camping days are usually available; contact Orick Chamber of Commerce at 707-488-2885.
Food: Dinner at the awards banquet on Saturday night will be provided for all entrants starting about 6 PM. Extra meal tickets are $15.00.
ENTRY FORM NOTES: Download adult and junior rider entry forms here. 25 and 50 milers must show proof of current AERC membership or pay a $15 non-member fee. Entries postmarked 10 days or more in advance of the ride receive a $10 discount per ride entered. Checks cashed after the ride.
